Richard Marlin began teaching in Lismore in 1983. Since then, his school, Richard Marlin’s Success Martial Arts Black Belt Academy, has grown to be in the top echelon of martial arts schools in Australia.
Richard Marlin has been in the martial arts for over 30 years. He started training in the martial arts while studying economics at university and was so captivated that he decided to make it his career.
He has been teaching at the same location at 81 Union Street since March, 1985. He teaches what is called a Karate Blend, the best of the many styles and arts that he has learned in the last 30 years. He was the 7th Australian to be awarded a Black Belt in the Korean art of Hapkido by the Korean master, Sung Do Kim, and he is a 7th Degree Black Belt in the Filipino style of karate called Arjuken.
During his competitive career, encouraged by the example of is teacher, Karate master Jeff Traish, he had over 300 tournament fights, fought in 6 different countries, and captained and coached winning Australian teams overseas. He has represented Australia at the Oceania Championships, the Asian and Pacific Championships and the World Championships. He was three times Australian karate Champion and three times Oceania Champion.
He has won state and national coaching awards, an Australia Day Sports Award and has personally coached hundreds of students to state, national and international level in karate. He is also the winner of the 2010 Martial Arts Professionals Award for contribution to the promotion of Australian Martial Arts.
This one school in Lismore has produced more national gold medals than any other school (in excess of 100) and holds the record for the most number of national karate champions from a single school in one year.
He is also in demand as a guest instructor at other martial arts schools throughout Australia, and speaks at international martial arts conventions on how martial arts teachers can apply the wisdom of the martial arts to help transform their students’ and their own lives.
The style of martial arts isn’t the most important thing. The quality of the training is important, and what the student learns and gains from the training is important; confidence, self discipline, goal direction, focus management, self defence ability, being healthy and fit, a sense of personal achievement, enjoyment, a challenge, stress relief, weight loss and so on. Richard Marlin’s goal, and that of his fulltime professional staff, is to impact on our community by transforming people’s lives.
Master Richard and the staff and students of Success Martial Arts have been very active in contributing to the community, through involvement in The Kids in Community program from its inception, fundraising for various charities, and for Primary Schools, raising over $30,000 for local schools through the After Schools Program alone, and more recently instigating the Bully Prevention Lismore campaign.
