What if you hear someone criticise or put down our school?

First, sometimes we are tempted to be critical of other styles or schools, especially when we are excited about the one with which we are involved, or if someone from another school tries to misrepresent us. But, of course, there is no need for that and it is good to be mindful of the SMA code of conduct outside the school:

“Always conduct yourself in a manner befitting your art and your club.
Refrain from making critical comments about other styles, schools or instructors.”

Second, everyone who has been around long enough and has gained a measure of success is a target for detractors and criticism. The tall poppy syndrome is real. If you happen to run into someone from another school who has negative comments, well...anybody can speak out of ignorance.

Third, everybody likes to paint their own organisation in a good light and feel as though they are a part of something that is the “best.” Students and instructors are sometimes good at putting down other styles, or instructors, or schools, because they have this need to compare themselves in a favourable light to others. Many people unconsciously believe that they have to blow out other’s candles so their candle can shine brighter. The truth is most martial arts schools and instructors are great for the students who have come across their path and when you light other's candles, we all shine brighter.

Of course we do care about what people think but that doesn't mean we have to let that influence our choice of words or actions!

Remember; strive to live each day with a sincere, caring attitude, regardless of your position, or what attitudes you are confronted with. It works both ways: The more you give, the more you receive.
